A Message from the Utility Department

The Town of Hertford wants to treat its citizens in a fair and indiscriminate manner, while recognizing the distinct needs and requirements of each customer. To provide some uniformity of service, the Town has adopted a customer service policy.

If you have any questions concerning your utility account, or questions on starting a new account contact the Utility Department at (252) 426-5311.

Note: There will be no more disconnect notices mailed out, please see your bill for disconnect date and amount.



There are multiple ways you may pay your utility bill. You may mail it in to PO Box 32 Hertford, NC 27944, drop it in our dropbox located on our front porch, in person at the Municipal Building, and now online. We accept cash, check, money orders, and card (only Visa and Mastercard). 

Utility bills are due on the 10th of every month. The following day a 5% late fee is added, and cut-off day is 10 days after the bill due date. The Town of Hertford does allow its customers 3 extensions a year. Customers may use their extensions at any time during the year, but may not use them consecutively.

A Message from the Hertford License Plate Agency

The Hertford License Plate Agency (LPA), located inside the Municipal Building, is here to assist you with all of your titling and registration needs. The Hertford LPA does not handle anything concerning Drivers License or ID Cards. 

If you have any DMV related questions, you can contact the Hertford LPA at (252) 426-1087 or you may contact the main office in Raleigh at (919) 715-7000.


NC Mobile Drivers License Unit

The NC Mobile Drivers License Unit visits Hertford a few times a year, and sets up in the back room of the Municipal Building. They are here to assist with your Drivers License and ID Card needs. They do not conduct any road tests.  If you have any questions on how the NC Mobile Drivers License Unit can assist you, you can contact DMV in Raleigh at (919) 715-7000.
